Arm Pain, Arm Discomfort and Numbness
and Tingling into the Arms and Hands
As chiropractors, we see many different types of conditions walk into our office. Arm pain, pain radiation into the arm, arm or hand weakness and numbness and tingling into the arms and hands are very common conditions that we treat successfully.
What Causes Arm Pain and Numbness and Tingling into the Arms and Hands?
Most arm pain originates from the cervical (neck) region of the spine. There are a series of 5 nerves that form what is called the brachial plexus that originate from the neck. There are several potential causes of arm pain or radiation into the arm:
- If the spine misaligns or develops a subluxation in one of these areas, pressure from that misalignment can cause arm pain.
- Disc degeneration
- Disc herniation
- And any combination of the above!
It is definitely concerning to have arm pain because it is usually an indication of direct pressure on a nerve in the neck. Most of the time when arm pain develops, the underlying cause of the problem in the cervical region of the spine has been progressing for many years. Most people who come in with arm pain do not know they had problems developing because only 10% of the nervous system feels pain.
Usually, when we take x-rays of the neck in cases such as arm pain, we see arthritis, loss of disc space, bone spurs and degeneration which are signs that the problem started many, many years ago.
If the underlying cause of arm pain is not found and handled and managed in an appropriate and timely manner, a person can end up with steroid shots in the neck and many people end up in surgery.
Case Study on Arm Pain
Recently a patient came into our office with neck pain and left arm pain down to the elbow. He had difficulty turning his head in any direction and couldn’t move his arm due to the pain and progressing weakness. Deep tendon reflexes were decreased into his left elbow and decreased sensation into his upper arm which indicated direct pressure on a nerve in his neck. An MRI taken by a neurosurgeon showed a large disc bulge in his cervical spine putting pressure on the nerve. The young man came to us because his only other option suggested by the neurosurgeon was surgery as past and recent physical therapy and steroid injections had no effect.
After 3 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, this young man in his 30s had no arm pain, no neck pain and full range of motion in his neck. He still has a disc bulge but is not experiencing symptoms. He is grateful that he will not have to undergo a risky surgery and is very happy that he can turn his head to check his blind spot while driving. He is also able to pick up his 3 year old son which is something he wasn’t able to with the symptoms.
