Why Do Kids Need Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is of course important for people of all ages. However, we are often asked by people “why would children need chiropractic care?” In order to understand why kids need chiropractic care, it’s important to understand the intention of chiropractic adjustment.
As chiropractors, our focus is on the spine and on the nervous system. The nervous system controls every function in our bodies! All cells, tissues and organs have an ultimate control from the nervous system. Occasionally, there can be interference with the transmissions from the nerves to the different parts of the body due to spinal misalignments, or what we call Subluxations. Subluxations can occur at any age due to many different reasons, and often the first subluxation occurs when we are very young — even as early as childbirth (See our article on infants and chiropractic). The interesting thing about subluxations is that we do not have to feel them as only 10% of our entire nervous system feels pain.
Causes of Subluxations in Children
There are many different ways that children can develop subluxations or misalignments in their spine. Here are some of the most common:
- Childbirth and injuries that occur with childbirth
- Slips and falls
- Sports injuries
- Lack of nutrients in food
- Eating too many processed foods or fast foods
- Drinking too many sugary drinks or sodas
- Stress due to school or relationships at home or with friends
- Poor posture with desk work or with iPads or iPods/hand-held gaming units
The greatest thing about having children under chiropractic care is that we are able to address these misalignments as they occur and keep a child’s nervous system functioning and developing as healthy as it can be. However, if these subluxations are allowed to continue without being treated, it becomes more difficult to fix them as a child grows into adulthood.
Although our intention with chiropractic treatments and adjustments is to keep children as healthy as they can be, and growing and developing at their full potential, we do see many children who have different types of conditions and issues as a result of misalignments in their spines.
- Ear infections
- Eczema and Psoriasis
- Enuresis (bed wetting)
- Focus and attention problems
- Immune deficiencies
- Kids who get sick often
- Motor tics
- Musculoskeletal dysfunction (neck pain, lower back pain, headaches, stiffness, etc)
- Problems with digestion
- Sinus congestion
- Sore throats
Children and ADHD or Focus & Attention Issues
We have many children come to us for chiropractic care because their parents are concerned that they have a condition or issue and did not wish to medicate their child for that condition. Many parents understand that all medications have side effects and want to keep their children as far away from unnecessary toxins as possible. We see this especially with kids who have problems with ADHD or focus and attention issues. Often these kids aren’t doing well in school, and it is suggested to them by teachers or medical doctors that they be put on some sort of medication to make them focus. These psychotropic medications actually have side effects such as anxiety, heart palpitations, nervousness, dizziness, unusual behavior, and even motor tics. Many of these drugs are habit forming and are more apt to be abused. No wonder many parents seek more natural routes to help manage ADHD.
During a chiropractic examination of a child with focus and attention issues, we often find subluxations in the upper cervical area (upper neck area). These are the nerves that supply the parts of the brain that help a person to think and process information productively. If there are misalignments in this area, as chiropractors we often see anxiety, sleeping problems, depression, and focus and attention issues.
As we shift the spine gently from the bad position to the good position, many times children notice that they can focus better in school, they enjoy reading more, they develop better relationships with their teachers and their parents, and their grades improve. All of these things lead to a higher self-esteem in a child, and it is exciting to watch their transformation!
Of course people of all ages need chiropractic care! Our most favorite patients are children because when we adjust children, we change a generation!
Kids Will be Kids
Childhood is a time full of adventure and new experiences. A time for kids to explore, learn, grow, and develop their personality. In the process of playing, studying, doing chores, riding roller coasters, and just living life, subluxations will happen from time to time. Everyone gets them.
