Does Our Medical System Provide Real Health Care?
At Kempsville Chiropractic, our purpose is to educate as many people as possible on health and wellness. We want you to take a fresh look at your health and wellness.
How Valuable is Your Health to You?
Augusten Burroughs said, “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters at all.” Your health is your most valuable asset, but too often we take it for granted. 80% of the population doesn’t consider their health until they lose it.
There is no relationship between how you feel and your level of health.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions regarding one’s health. Many people believe that they are healthy until they have a symptom or are diagnosed with a disease. All too often we hear stories of people who thought they were healthy, and then the next day they find out they are dying. It is natural for people to assume they are well because they don’t feel ill. Yet, many leading causes of death are not even related to pain. The top three causes of death are heart attacks, cancer, and the results of medical treatments (surgeries, medication errors, hospital infections, and negative drug effects).
Consider these other diseases. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, osteoarthritis and aching joints, and depression or anxiety. Like heart disease and cancer, none of these diseases suddenly happen. The truth is, it took years for these diseases to develop to the point where they were finally diagnosed.
Are health problems a normal part of life?
Here is another misconception about health and disease. We too often confuse common health problems or conditions with what should be normal. We believe that headaches, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are normal because these are common. While these are all common conditions however, they are not normal. In fact, they are the opposite of normal. It is not normal for anyone to have to live with migraine headaches or to have diabetes.
Many people believe they have a disease because it runs in their family. They are convinced that because their parents have a medical condition that they are at risk to have the same problem. Science tells us this is not true. Only 2-4% of all health conditions are genetic!
The Genome study revealed that the human body has genes for everything. However… Genes are turned on with poor lifestyle choices. This is known as “genetic expression.” If you are inheriting anything that is negatively affecting your health, it is most likely poor lifestyle choices.
Poor lifestyle choices are passed down all the time. If your parents ate unhealthy foods most of the time, you probably ate the same unhealthy foods. The same is true with your lifestyle habits. If your parents did not exercise, you probably did not pick up this healthy habit.
Poor lifestyle choices create disease.
Are you Reactive or Proactive when it comes to your health?
Most people are reactive when it comes to their health. They only react after something goes wrong, and then most people react to the symptom instead of the underlying cause of the problem. What do most people do when they develop a symptom or have a health concern? We all know the answer. Most people take a drug!
Too often when we use medications to deal with every ache and pain, and to alleviate symptoms, and many do so without discovering the source of their problems. The U.S. has the most advanced medical system in the world. Patients travel to our country from around the world to be cared for by our specialists. In spite of this, most patients receive very little education on what caused their problem and how they can correct the root cause of the problem.
Here are some surprising statistics regarding our world-class medical system.
The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) ranks the U.S. 38th in overall health.
The U.S. makes up 5% of the world’s population, and we take 50% of the world prescription medications.
We Are An Over-Medicated Society
Today, it is hard to watch a TV show without seeing a drug commercial. These commercials all promote how XYZ drug is going to take care of your health problem and make your world better. Yet at the end of all these commercials there is always a disclaimer. A disclaimer that seems to go on and on, listing side effect after side effect. Is it just me, or do the side effects seem worse than the initial problem?
The Medical News Today reported that in 2011 American doctors wrote 4.02 billion prescriptions. That is around 13 prescriptions for every person – man, woman and child – in the United States. That’s a lot of prescriptions and a lot of drugs. We are so over-medicated that a lot of our drinking water now contains traces of prescription drugs due to improper disposal of drugs, and human waste containing unused medications.
All drugs have multiple side effects, and when you start using multiple drugs simultaneously, the potential side effects can increase exponentially. Medical side effects have become the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in our country.
Symptoms and Conditions are Warning Signs
Symptoms and conditions are warning signs our bodies give us regarding our health and wellness. They are part of our body’s alert system trying to tell us that something is wrong and needs to be corrected — not ignored or simply covered up by medications.
Our central nervous system controls and coordinates everything in our bodies. When you look closely at the role of the central nervous system, you will discover that 90% of the system controls every function in our body, and the remaining 10% of the nerves are responsible for what we feel. This is why pain is often a final warning that something has gone wrong and needs to be corrected.
Chiropractic care focuses on your spine and central nervous system. The nervous system consists of your brain, your spinal cord, and the nerves in your body. The nervous system controls and coordinates every cell, tissue, organ, and organ system. The goal of chiropractic care is to find the underlying cause of your health problem(s), correct the problem, and restore normal function to your body. All too often, people are taking medicine to mask the pain and cover up the real problem. Using chiropractic care, we work to correct the actual problem allowing our patients to cut back on medications, and in some cases eliminate them entirely.
The number one source of interference to the nervous system is spinal subluxation. A subluxation is a misalignment to the spine or decrease motion of a spinal bone that puts pressure on your nerves. This interference causes problems with your nervous system, which it turn can affect the way your body functions. Since only 10% of your nerves feel pain, health problems can develop over time without you becoming aware of them. This is why you can feel fine one day and have a heart attack the next or be diagnosed with cancer!
Subluxations are due to 3 stresses:
- Physical Stresses:
- Childhood trauma
- Slips or falls
- Sports injuries
- Car accidents
- Poor posture
- Repetitive motion
- What you breathe in
- What you drink
- Health Conditions
As chiropractors, we are experts at finding and correcting subluxations, thus restoring proper nerve supply to every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body. Everyday we see all kinds of interesting cases: infertility, migraines, infants & kids, ADD/ADHD, incontinence, and much more.

What is a Chiropractic Checkup?
At Kempsville Chiropractic, we consider a chiropractic checkup an important tool to assist us in keeping you healthy.
A chiropractic checkup is used to understand what the underlying cause of your problem is. We will test reflexes, do sensory testing, and various orthopedic tests. Depending on your individual circumstance and health issues, we will do a full examination with orthopedic, neurological, chiropractic, and physical exam tests, as needed, to check and determine the underlying cause of your problem. We may also use the latest computer technology to scan your nerves as they exit your spine and go to your organs and muscles. These tests can include surface electromyogram, infrared scan, and a heart rate variability (HRV) test. If necessary we will take x-rays. An x-ray of the spine allows us to determine exactly what your spinal alignment looks like, see if there is any disc degeneration, as well as look to see if there is any osteoarthritis which can be effecting or putting pressure on the nerves.
Once your chiropractic checkup is completed, we will have gained comprehensive knowledge of how well your nervous system is operating, and if you have any subluxations, slipped discs, or pinched nerves. At this point, we can put together a plan to correct any problem you may have, and restore normal function and movement.
