Neck Pain and Chiropractic Care
Neck pain is something everyone deals with throughout our entire lives—from the trauma of birth to waking up with a “crick in your neck.” The big question is how do you treat your neck pain? Many chose to ignore it, some will take medication to deal with the pain, some will see a doctor if the pain persists, and others will recognize how important the nerves running through your neck are and see a chiropractor to make sure the problem is actually corrected instead of medicated.
Your Neck is Very Important.
People often take the health of their neck for granted. The health of your neck is very important, and when you feel pain in your neck it is a warning. Your body functions under the control of your central nervous system which starts in your brain and turns into the spinal cord running through the 7 bones in your neck into your spine. From there, the nerves branch out into your body between the bones in your neck and spine to control every system in your body. By “every system,” I mean every muscle, every organ, every function…everything including every cell in your body. Your neck is the gateway between your brain and the rest of your body. So, when your neck is out of alignment, it will affect the rest of your body.
If you have neck pain, something is wrong. Neck pain is your body telling you something is wrong, but neck pain is often a final warning that something is wrong. Since only approximately 10% of your nervous system can feel pain, you may have had these problems for years and not known about it until it got progressively worse—bad enough for you to feel pain.
When there is any type of interference to your nervous system, your body will not function optimally. You will get sick more, have more headaches (Neck pain is a leading cause of headaches. 95% of headaches originate in the neck), have a weaker immune system, sleep issues, more severe allergies, numbness and tingling running down into your arms, and a lot of times people start experiencing things like anxiety and depression. Leaving subluxations, or misalignments, that cause neck pain untreated can lead to additional problems.
As you can see, neck pain is not something to ignore and hope it will go away. Due to the importance of your nervous system to your overall health, you can see why it is important to make sure that there are no subluxations, or misalignments, in your neck. Subluxations are often the cause of neck pain as they cause irritations to your central nervous system, and hinder the communication between your brain and every function of your body. Once you understand this, you will see know why it is important to see a chiropractor regularly and live a chiropractic lifestyle.
Some Causes of Neck Pain
Birth. Passage through the vaginal canal is very traumatic and often causes damage to a newborn’s neck leading to many newborn and toddler health issues. This often goes undetected because a baby cannot tell you they have neck pain.
Accidents. Most people immediately think about whiplash when correlating automobile accidents with chiropractors. However, any type of accident (falls, banging your head, auto accidents, and more) can affect the alignment of your neck, and while it may not cause you neck pain immediately, it can have adverse effects in the near future.
Sports. Many sports involve abrupt movements of the neck and / or contact to the head. Anyone participating in sports should have regular chiropractic adjustments to make sure their neck and spine are in proper alignment. Chiropractic care will also improve your performance.
Work. Many of us spend our days working at computers, often with improper posture. Many people regularly hold a phone to their ear with their shoulder and the neck bent. For others, the stress of work tightens their muscles causing subluxations, or misalignments, in the neck, which will cause neck pain.
Sleeping Wrong. To be more correct, sleeping with your neck in the wrong position. The neck’s natural arch is a backward “C” curving toward the back of your head. Often pillows push your head forward trying to straighten your neck instead of allowing your neck to maintain its proper arch. Side sleepers often sleep with their neck bent. Not only can these sleeping positions result in neck pain, but often lead to many other problems.
Arthritis. Arthritis, or osteoarthritis, is the degeneration of a joint. Any joint in the body will degenerate if it is misaligned or not moving properly. This means that any joint in your body that does not function or move properly can degenerate. Many people experience arthritis neck pain. Chiropractic care can help with arthritis neck pain.
Taking Pain Medicine can be Damaging
I am sure that everyone has seen all these TV commercials with a list of side effects from the medication that seem worse than the initial problem itself. Well, now there is a new commercial that actually admits that taking pain medicine does not deal with the problem. In this commercial they say that taking X medicine merely blocks the signal of pain to your brain, but taking their medicine will deal with your pain in the immediate area. In both these cases, medicine is being used to treat the symptom and not the root cause of the problem.
As chiropractors, our main focus is to discover exactly what is the underlying cause of that problem and determine what is the best way to correct it, eliminating the problem. Blocking the pain and hiding the problem can lead to more problems because the nerves from our neck control and coordinate many other things.
So if you’re experiencing neck pain you definitely need to make an appointment as soon as possible so we can find out exactly what is the true underlying cause of the problem and the best way to correct it.
