Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care
Pregnancy is an exciting and wonderful experience on a family’s timeline. There are many changes that happen in a woman’s body throughout this experience as her baby grows and develops until the time for childbirth.
The benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy are many. Women, who are under chiropractic care sleep better, have less stress, have more energy, less nausea, and, of course, have less aches and pains during their pregnancy than women who do not receive chiropractic care at all. Because they have less aches and pains, women who are under chiropractic care take less drugs during pregnancy than other pregnant women. Drugs will ultimately have a negative effect on a developing baby's future health.
Pregnancy and Lower Back Pain and Leg Pain
In fact, the number one condition and number one reason why most women seek chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy is for lower back pain, and sciatica or leg pain. As a pregnant woman quickly gains weight in her abdomen, her center of gravity begins to shift. Hormones called Relaxin are also produced during pregnancy and cause joint laxity and even instability. This pulls the lumbar spine and pelvis (or lower back) forward putting a lot of pressure on the nerves that exit between the vertebrae. Misalignment of the spine and/or pelvis is called a subluxation. It can be very painful in the lower back as a result. This pain can lead to a lot of stress and anxiety for a mother-to-be and can affect the quality of her life.
These nerves that receive the pressure from the subluxation, or misalignment, are also the nerves that travel into the legs and into the feet. Oftentimes as a result of this pressure, sciatica or leg pain can occur and the intensity can vary from very mild to debilitating. This will affect a mom’s ability to walk, move, or even sleep.
It is important to know that when symptoms like lower back pain or sciatica develop during a pregnancy, it is usually because a lower back condition already existed. Only 10% of the nervous system feels pain so pain is usually one of the last indicators of the problem. Due to fast-weight gain during pregnancy, the shift in the center of gravity of a pregnant woman and the pre-existing lower back condition, lower back pain and sciatica can develop.
Chiropractic Care to Help the Birthing Process
Many women choose to use chiropractic care during their pregnancy to help the birthing process. The nerves in the lower back supply the uterus and ovaries, as well as the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. When the alignment of the vertebrae in the lower back is optimal, the nerve supply is also optimal to these structures. This allows these muscles to act in coordination throughout labor and delivery, allowing labor to progress as nature intended it to.
Pregnant women who are not under chiropractic care are subject to a condition called “intrauterine constraint.” This is a condition that affects the baby while in the womb most of all, and can make the birthing process more difficult, longer and more painful than it should be.
The uterus is attached to the pelvis by ligaments and soft tissue. When the pelvis becomes misaligned, the uterus in turn, surrounded by these ligaments that are attached to the pelvis, can also become twisted or torqued. This can cause problems with the amount of space and type of motion a baby can have in utero and is of utmost concern if the baby is not able to get into the most optimal position for birth. Intrauterine constraint can lead to a higher rate of forceps usage, vacuum suction, induced labors, epidurals, non-progressing labors, and even Caesarean section births, all of which pose significant increased risks to both mother and baby.
Chiropractic care helps to keep the mother's pelvis optimally aligned during the pregnancy decreasing the chances for a baby to be breech, or head up, prior to labor.
In the event a baby is breech, there is a chiropractic technique called the "Webster technique" that helps to reduce intrauterine constraint allowing the baby to get into an optimal position for birth.
